Reasons why the TTC sucks

As much as I usually love the TTC, there are often those inevitable moments where you'll think "I hate the TTC." I had two of those today. I think I'll make this a regular feature.

Reason #1

I was on the way to work in the morning when the train stops mid-station. Turns out there was a "personal injury" at Spadina station. I really hope it wasn't a subway jumper.

So they announce that there will be shuttle buses between Keele and St. George, without explaining why any station other than spadina wouldn't continue to operate. The train I was on let its passengers off at Ossington, and we waited two hours for a shuttle bus.

The TTC's excellent management skills led to the following problem: The shuttle bus started picking up passengers at Keele, and were always full by the time they got to Ossington, which severely irked the people waiting (including myself). After two hours of waiting, we get news that the subway is running again, and I finally made it to the office.

I realize that the initial "personal injury" situation wasn't the TTC's fault, but the response could have been much better. Explaining why you can't do something goes a long way in satisfying your customers. The TTC didn't explain why every station betweek Keele and St. George had no service even though the incident occurred at Spadina. They cobbled together shuttle buses which were slow, late, and always over capacity. If a passenger has to wait 2 hours when trying to get to work in the morning, your response has failed.

Reason #2

Rude/idiotic drivers. The majority of bus drivers are nice and polite people. But when you run into the idiots, it really irks you to no end. Most TTC users are familiar with the situation where a driver makes a quick stop to hand the wheel to his replacement. This is usually done without a hitch, but my driver and his replacement decide to have a chat today, and we were literally sitting there for about 4 minutes. That's a long time when the bus runs every 10 minutes.

Now that I'm ranting already, let's add a few more reasons. The TTC recently advertised that it can now help people in over 100 languages. Did nobody bother to tell them that it's not their job? And fine, it could be a useful service, especially for new Canadians. But how about buses that run on time, expanded service, clean premises, and courteous employees? Take care of the damned basics before deciding to spend time and money on language services.

Also, the TTC website sucks. It is the ugliest, most useless piece of garbage ever.

Finally, does anyone know why it is that Islington station smells like barf EVERY morning?

  1. One of the reasons I think is Canadians are too complacent a people. The bus is 2 hrs late no one complains a lot. People strike illegally (the TTC strike two years ago) no one does anything. Go has a derailment and people are essentially told to "make other arrangements" no one says anything.

Any other country and people would be up in arms.

    2. @Mezba: I agree entirely! I hate how Canadians have such low standards for themselves. Our TTC system here in Toronto is utter CRAP. Almost every single day, there's a delay with the subway train due to an activated "passenger-assistance alarm". I mean, seriously? I ride the TTC everyday, and so far none of the trains I've been on has had someone activate the alarm. I think these "delays" are plain hogwash excuses fabricated by the TTC personnel in situations where their schedule is delayed -- and this happens much too often.

The employees of TTC should quit being so lazy and follow the examples of more efficient subway systems from around the world -- Hong Kong and Japan, for example.

  2. I went through an incident where the driver had gone into road rage and a passenger had to calm him down. To top it all, the driver started swearing racially offensive remarks. He completely freaked me out. Most TTC drivers are very nice, but occasionally there are a few scary ones.

  3. i used to live in america now im living in canada. TTC suuuucks ok. You people dont know what u are dealing with here. I mean my apologies to those polite drivers but i really get pissed off when the bus comes like 3 hours late or when one time this fuu""" idiot driver asks me for the TTC student card, i mean nobody asked me ever about the TTC student card in a bus.. and had to get out the bus callin him a stupid peace of sh&&& i mean people come on i still dont get why canadians are so quite about everything... when it comes to confronting the drivers they are so soft... ye get out the bus... i mean, it makes me punch them in the face...

  4. Canadians are too complacent. Are you f**king kidding me?

I just screamed at an idiot ticket booth vendor who refused to accept that my change was stuck in one of their token machines. I tried to get a token via change this morning. It was the only change I had on me at the time. I am not broke, but was in a rush. The ticket guy, became all dismissive when I said the machine wasn't working, and was jammed. He said I needed to put all my money in. I tried to be nice, and went back to the machine but it was clearly jammed. I said listen it's jammed, you have my money. I will pay the rest and just get on. He locked his turnstile and said I had to pay $2.75. I said to him, your machine is f**king broken, and you have my money. I then hopped the turnstile, and ignored him as he yelled at me. I wonder if they have a profile of me as a fare jumper. What a bunch of bullshit. They have my money stuck in their stupid machine anyway.

  5. Is anyone else severely annoyed at ttc drivers who talk on their cell phones and drive at the same time. I can remember watching an idiot speed while making a left hand turn, on his cell phone. Quite a feat with 30 passengers, I must admit. They should be given tickets for that kind of crap.

  6. TTC sucks. 1) Customer service is non-existent. The are the rudest bunch I've seen. Thank you TTC union. 2)Streetcars come 2-4 in a row because drivers love to chat at the end-lines. I don't buy the double-parked car or broken streetcar line. It happens ALL the time!

It will never change 1) as long as they are unionized 2) because Canadians are complacent and don't complain.

  7. A TTC ticket booth employee locked the turnsile on me going through, AFTER I paid, just to be a prick. That hurt my legs, and my feelings actually.

    Want revenge?

BANG ON THE PLEXIGLASS of the booth.

It's deafeningly loud in there, and a good way to mess with them for a change.

There will be a good fight before we are rid of the scourge that is the worthless TTC man.

Oh, and streetcars have no place. They back up cars causing more pollution than the trolley cars prevent. They provoke unsafe driving by people frustrated in their attempts to pass.

Switch to electric buses, TTC and stop acting like you control ALL other vehicle traffic. And metal rails on roads? Just a bad, costly idea. Just do something - before we do.

  8. TTC SUCKS....END OF. I hate seeing those ads that say "Just a reminder, we're still the better way" refering to themselves as perfect yet 99% of the time the buses never arrive on schedule

    ReplyDelete
  9. We,re screwed! Now they have us where they have always wanted us.Now that they`ve raised parking prices at all lots we will be forced to pay $2.75 to take their crappy, hardassed seat buses more. Now in cooperation with banks, people will either be forced to pay for parking via debit or credit cards.Way to go!This is what we get for not complaining,or regulating them, like other boroughs have. They know they are an essential service that shouldn,t be allowed to strike, but guess what, they will go on strike for more again, because we just take it!we can look forward to higher fares, and higher metropasses. The better way is getting worse!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I completely agree with the people that said that Canadians lack the ability to complain to the TTC about their services. I mean, bloody hell, when I used to take buss number 25 in the morning, four of them often arrived at the same time and that used to piss the hell out of me.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Completely useless. Never on time. As per the previous comments, they're now raising the prices again in the coming year. Raising prices for that crap service!!!

  12. Stop complaining about ttc.
Where else you could be paid 100+ k a year for being rude and obnoxious to customers (ticket collectors).
What about the story where driver tried to strangle a woman only because he didn’t like her behaviour.
I wonder sometimes where ttc gets it’s employers from ? Do they have special selection
    Only total ass… need apply??
I know there are some really nice guys working for ttc too. My estimate it’s about 5-10% for drivers.
As for ticket collectors I have not yet met one who is nice and polite.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I hate the TTC. I would like to see a mayor come in and fire the whole union and make the TTC a privately run operation. One thing is the ticket booths...ticket booths? Why are we paying these people $26.58 an hour to sit and dispense tickets when it could all be automated?
Outdated technology and infrastructure makes it like it's stuck in the 1970s for chrissakes...ugh.

  14. i take the ttc 2 to 4 times a day. I have nothing good to say about the service, the people who work there or the people who run it. The people who run it are absolute idiots. I dont care if the drivers or collectors are polite as long as they do their job right. If I am expected to pay $3 to take a bus I expect to get competent service. I have come across bus drivers that cant drive, that are on the phone, collectors that are on the phone, play video games on their psp, check emails etc. I am at a point where I have stopped paying for the service. Nobody says anything. I walk by the collector without paying a dime. Sometimes i just pay a penny or two. I suggest you do the same. These people are idiots. Why pay them? They constantly do something stupid with the money anyway. They waste it on the idiots who work there and then they complain about not having enough money. How can they complain when idiots like adam giambrone run things. Why dont they get someone with experience running the show? So unions can control this idiot? Get an experienced manager to run things, someone with a proper education and experience and I will pay $10. Think about it. They sell a service with an inelastic demand. That means that day in and day out people will continue to pay no matter what. How can someone fuck things up when they know how much they are going to make month in and month out. In the ttc idiocy and incompetence have taken a whole new meaning and it is not their fault. It is our fault. We elect these idiots and continue to pay for the bad service. These people are idiots, treat them like idiots and they will smarten up. If you dont do nothing will ever change.

    ReplyDelete
  15. TTC does suck into their bones!!! They have no customer service at all, and I rarely saw any of those drivers were even trying to be nice or polite to their passengers! Does it because their salaries are so low that they were always feeling depressing about their jobs? The answer as a lot of people knew that it's not true at all! Their salaries are 60thousands and much over a year!

So we are really wondering what made them so unprofessional and careless! Are they a bunch of cold blood suckers? Maybe!!!

Several months ago, I was waiting streetcar 510/509 down Union Station around 9:10pm. A 509 had finally arrived as they are usually 20-120 mins. late. I was the last one in a short line going to aboard the car. There were 5 people ahead of me got on the car, and I just turned back to throw a garbage in the garbage can which is right behind of me. After I turned back to follow up the person one step in front of me to board on the car, the door just closed right here on my face that shocked me. I shout to the driver to open the door, but the driver didn't check with his side at all and just sped off. There was a curve of the track, I didn't get a second to back up from the car, and my ankle got hit right away. My right foot was bleeding by the hit, but the driver had been gone already. I felt totally helpless, like no one would care. Just imagine how sad were i at that moment!

Fortunately, I got a witness with me that night, and after 30 mins waiting, the TTC supervisor came, he said something even pissed me off, he said:"your wond didn't look like it had just happened..." When I told him I got a witness and gave him the witness's phone number, he yet called an ambulance...

After this incident, no one had ever called me to appologize.

So, just tell me, how bad TTC is!!!

  17. My father in law watched a TTC bus driver slam the bus door in an elderly womans face, after he let her husband on, and then drove away, leaving the two of them seperated. He then proceeded to yell at the old man that he doesn't have time to wait around for people, etc etc. He called the TTC and put in a complaint, absolutely nothing was said back to him. What a joke. The people working for the TTC make me sick.

I was in New York this summer, and even their transit people were friendly. New York has a reputation for bad attitudes, yet somehow the TTC seems to be worse the MTA.

  19. 1) Lack of subway lines: for the density of downtown Toronto, there needs to be 2-3 more subway lines.

    2) Poor customer service.

    3) They build lines for the political elite: the Sheppard line was build for Jewish condo developers. And now the Spadina extension will serve the Jewish living up north.

  27. Yesterday at 5:30 southbound on the Bay bus (#2455) at Grosvenor, an elderly lady was de-boarding at the back of the bus, she had one foot on the sidewalk and the doors closed on her leg and purse. she fell and hit her head and ended up UNDER the bus wedged between the bus and the sidewalk. Passengers started screaming "stop, don't move the bus!". The lady was helped up and stood on the sidewalk. The driver did not come to the back of the bus OR de-board the bus but instead stood at the front yelling "I didn't shut the doors, it wasn't my fault". Only after he saw me and another girl on our phones (I think he assumed we were calling the police) did he come out (about 10 minutes after the incident) and barreled toward the victim asking/yelling "do you need medical attention?". She started saying that she was going to walk to Womens College emerg and I interupted and said "yes she DEF needs medical attention, its a head injury". He yelled "I wasn't talking to you stay out of it and blaming me". He asked the question again, the victim said the same thing so he said "good" and walked back to the bus and took off. The only thing he was concerned with was blame.
Luckily, the lady is ok, I got a voicemail from her thanking me for helping her and she told me the doctors said she was ok. Thank goodness. TTC are pigs, all of them. Bunch of lazy, dirty, drunk PIGS!

Some subway stations can transfer to surface transport without paying; Others, can't and have to pay the surface transfer; You can never go back to subway once on surface; Nobody gives information about which station follows which rules. You never know who the &&^%$ker is made those rules but must be one of those Canadians without human heart.

  32. TTC sucks! I was at the Kennedy station today and they have the transfer machines downstairs. I got off the RT and immediately I saw my bus, I didn't have chance to grab a transfer before I got on the bus coz then I'd miss it. After I got on the bus, I tried to explain to the driver that I didn't have chance to get the transfer at subway station and may I please have a transfer. She yelled at me and kicked me out of the bus! I ended up walking my way home.

  34. TTC drivers are the rudest, most evil folks in the world.

Trust me. I have used many, many transit systems in the world, across many continents -- and none comes close to rivalling the TTC in terms of rudeness.

TTC fares are also one of the most outrageously expensive in the world.

Canadians need to do something to fix this very big problem in Toronto.

Nothing even comes close to the level of rudeness exhibited by the TTC drivers and staff.

I am not simply comparing different transit systems. Rather, I am talking about people in general, from whatever profession or industry.

Seriously, no people from any industry, walks of live or whatever comes close to being as rude as TTC staff.

    That should tell you something.

TTC staff's rudeness and aggressiveness almost amounts to criminal assault at times.

    That's how bad it is.

  37. Most of the TTC drivers are very nice and courteous but one night I gave my girlfriend a $20 dollar bill so she could buy her fare. The guy short-changed her by $2 and she didn't realize it until she gave the change back to me. When I went back to the booth the guy responded by saying, and this is a direct quote:

"Well if your girlfriend is too fucking stupid to count the change when I give it too here then that's here problem."

I was astonished that a person with a professional customer service job could behave so inappropriately. I argued with the guy telling him to apologize to my girlfriend or I wanted to file a formal complaint. When he refused to apologize I asked him for his name or id so I could file a formal complaint against him, he refused to identify himself to me or provide instructions to file a complaint. I told him I wanted to speak to his supervisor and he refused. I tried to phone customer service to file a complaint but they said the office was closed until Monday (it was a Friday night). I went home and filled out a complaint form online but when I hit the submit button instead of sending it electronically it instructed me to print out the form and mail it. Why the hell would you put an electronic form on the web site if you could not submit it electronically? It is stupid TTC employees like that and idiotically designed technology like electronic forms that can't be submitted electronically the really irk me.

  38. I fucking hate the TTC. Not just occasionally, every day of the week.

I remember a few months ago on my way to work, the TTC bus comes fucking late (as always) and on top of that only one time in 6 months, this bitch of a woman asks to see my TTC Photo Card. I show her my card, and she takes it away from me saying its last years card. I was in Grade 10 at the time and said, well it is last years. but 10 plus 1 is 11, therefore I'm in Grade 11, still a student and use a student metropass.

I even had my school ID card for the current year, which proves I am a student, and she says that 'its not the TTC one' Im thinking like 'fuck you bitch!' I am not trying to steal money from you, I proved I am a student twice and you still make me late for work. I told her 'I hope you have a fucking good time playing god behind a counter, bitch'

I end up being late for work.

    Dumb bitch.

  39. The TTC cause me to be late more than a numerous amount of time, for both work at school. I've listed below a few of the reasons why:

    1. The busses sometime never come on time, and instead they enjoy coming in pairs.

    2. With the excellent TTC management skills, when you were on a train that was delayed, you then run to your bus just as you see it drives off. After all that they could at least have the decency to wait a little.

    3. Don't get me started on the winter time delays, especially for the RT.

As well, the TTC seem to be getting paid a lot already, and I hate to see our tax money go to them for an increase of salaray everytime there is a strike.

Please respond to this to comment

  40. Although there are always crazy regular drivers on the road, TTC bus drivers NEED to be taken back to driving school and learn that their ignorance can be lethal.

    1) I've experienced numerous incidents of buses rushing out of stations into intersections with disregard to pedestrians having the right of way.

    2) Overcrowded buses (especially ones loaded with strollers) are a safety hazard, as well as risk for those with mobility issues (aged and physically disabled).

    3) As has been mentioned gaggles of buses can occur, especially on major routes. What also happens is that only one bus collects passengers while the other buses hide in the neighbouring lane (or behind the crowded one) and refuse to let people on.

    4) Just today (being the reason for me to write my first public criticism), a bus driver decided that waiting at a stop sign for a few moments was just too long. This is a merge point into an active traffic lane (so wait times tend to be a bit more extended as the active traffic lane does not need to yield). This bus driver had thought they were an exception and soon advanced into traffic, forcing a car that was approaching from the side/behind (in the active lane) to make an evasive change into the passing lane (the car was well past any "point of no return" to make way for this bus, even when it was the bus that legally needed to yield in this instance). The bus driver did not even mentally register the honking horn from the car as a notice to danger, and continued to push into the active lane.

A stop sign means STOP, until it is safe to enter traffic or is your turn to SAFELY progress though an intersection.

I'm willing to accept an extra 30 seconds wait for my bus to find a SAFE instance to enter traffic, instead of risk the safety of any other driver, cyclist, or pedestrian!

The TTC keeps wasting money trying to improve their poor public image trying to promote "open" forums with the public (and shift blame with PR), however they still have done NOTHING to improve the actual quality of service. Every week I run out of fingers and toes to count just the many minor incidents where service was terrible for no reason.

TTC employees make more money than I do, and I don't see a reason why. I'd be fired for similar bad behaviour, and I'd actually agree with the reason!

Be happy you have a job!

  41. Here is a complaint I sent to TTC.... I will let you know if they respond. I am sure some will have issues with my protest plan because I am keeping you from your destination but at some point we need a voice and I can only hope that instead of get angry at me, you will see the situation and join me. I am just at a loss for what else we can do.
This would be my third complaint about the same problem and as with the others would like a follow up email that acknowledges this actually went somewhere besides a spam folder.
The bus had followed the streetcar into the transfer at Gunns Rd, the people waiting for the bus boarded as people who just got off the street car were walking to the bus. Before we could get there, he closed his door and left, leaving myself, another 30 something woman and an elderly couple behind. I realize they have a schedule to maintain but would the extra minute to allow us to get there and board set him back that far? Like I said, this is the third complaint of a similar situation but the fifth incident. The two incidents that I did not formally submit a complaint about, I was unable to read the number of the TTC vehicle as it was leaving. I have had the street car pull out as the bus is entering the stop. Without any signs of this getting resolved, complaints falling on deaf ears and zero concern for me as a paying passenger, I guess the next time this happens I only have one recourse. I will sit on the stairs in the vehicles doorway until the next vehicle that just left shows up as a peaceful protest and form of strike as a passenger. This in the case of the bus could be twenty to thirty minutes. I feel that if the TTC drivers can strike when they feel conditions are not the way they want and feel their complaints aren’t answered, causing great delays and hardship for me without any reimbursement, I as a paying customer should be able to do so as well.

    1. I totally agree with everything in this thread about the TTC. Any other country in the world would boycott this pathetic excuse for a transit system. Today for example I went from Davenport and avenue road to Veatrice and College. Took 55 minutes. Totally ridiculous! At Av/Dav I waited almost 40 mins for a bus that is scheduled to arrive every 15 minutes. The 6 Bay is almost non existant at times. Coming back 3 Bay buses 6A,6 shorturn and 6E passed and so I finally got so fed up I just walked. Ever wonder why Toronto had so much traffic? TTC is probably the #1 answer. Canadians put up with way too much Bull in this city with TTC topping the list. Next time you hear someone down a Torontonian point them in the direction of the TTC! Abuse Central!

  43. The system is so bad, that I refuse to use it, preferring instead to drive. Yeah, it's a pain finding and paying for parking at times, but it beats using a system this broken. I was reminded today of why I refuse to use it when I purchased a family day pass to get around today. They sold it to me, not telling me it was only good for families on weekends and holidays, so when I went to use it, they came yelling at me for ripping them off.

Instead of listening to the explanation they threatened to call transit police, even though the person who sold me the ticket was 10 feet away, she stated I asked for an individual pass (which makes no sense - I am there with my husband and 2 kids and buy only 1 pass?)

  47. I am writing to show disappointment on the TTC drivers and the TTC service. A bus driver passed by at a high speed when it was reaching the stop and leaving a group of ppl had to wait another 30 mins for the next bus. This group of ppl has been taking that same bus everyday to work or to school. Since the weather was super this morning (feels like 40 degrees today) and they were just standing under the shade behind the bus waiting shelter. No one was able to catch the bus even for the ones who had managed to see the bus 'flying' away. It was lucky that there wasn't any senior or kids waiting, otherwise, another 30 mins of standing under the sun would not only cause late but may cause sunstroke or fainting. I understanding that the driver may not be able to see us, but he/she should show more understanding on the situation. After all the TTC should be serving ppl in the area, it has no meaning for an empty bus to just pass by every bus stop quickly and leaving everyone who are relying on the bus service to work or to school behind.

  48. Islington station smells like barf because anyone living in Mississauga who wishes to commute to Toronto has to go there via a long as hell bus ride, and by the time they get there they get sick and throw up at the sight of the terrible transportation system.

  49. TTC Lazy, over paid and incompetent staff. Dirty stations, outrageous fares, late buses. Just horrible.

  50. So disappointed in the TTC. Just today I had to walk to my destination because it was too cold and snowy to wait for the 54 Lawrence bus that was supposed to come every 35 mins and yet didn't show up for over an hour and a half. Three buses should have passed by during that time, yet my entire walk I didn't see one. This isn't the first time that's happened. I shouldn't have to leave my house two hours ahead of schedule every other day just to get somewhere that is a 40 mins drive away because the fucking TTC is too disorganized to run properly and on schedule.

  51. A driver asked to see my TTC Student ID, which happens every 4 months. Turns out I had inadvertently purchased a high school Metropass when I am in post-secondary. Judging by the number of online ads there are, it seems to be a common mistake. I can see how it's my fault how I should have noticed it sooner and gotten it traded at a collectors' booth when I accidentally bought it. But those passes are exactly the same price: $106. Instead of directing me to a place where I can trade my invalid pass with a valid one, the driver confiscated it. What's the point of making them the same price if one is usable and one is not? Isn't it better to make one pass instead? I can't see how it's fare evasion considering I'm paying exactly the same thing. Now I have to buy some tokens and a weekly pass ($30.50) for school next week. That's a lot of money down the drain for $0's worth of supposed fare evasion. It's like the TTC is trying to rip customers off. Luckily I keep extra tokens with me because I know to expect situations like these and I made it to my doctor's appointment on time. I walked home instead.

    1. You should have definitely filed an official report/complaint against TTC. The bus driver literally stole your $106 Metropass. They had NO right to confiscate it under the guise of "fare evasion", because, as you note, the High School and Post Secondary metropasses are exactly the same price. If I were you, I would've fought tooth and nail for some justice.
